K-12 PD Webinar 14: Comprehensible Input as the Most Important Factor in Language Acquisition

We “acquire” (not “learn”) language when we understand what we hear and what we read, when we get “comprehensible input.” We do not acquire language when we speak, write or study it. Effective methods supply interesting and comprehensible input, often in the form of stories (otherwise known as “literature” and “fiction”). Stephen Krashen’s input hypothesis is one of the most influential theories of second language acquisition. In this webinar, Prof. Stephen Krashen will explain why Comprehensible Input is the most important factor in learning another language.

K12-PD Webinar 15: Narrative Inquiry for Language Teachers and Teacher-Researchers

In this presentation, Prof. Barkhuizen will provide a broad overview of approaches to narrative inquiry in language teaching and learning research. After describing what narrative inquiry is, including pointing out the centrality of stories in narrative research, he will provide some recent examples of narrative research, including types of data collection and analysis. These examples will illustrate methods useful for busy language teachers, and some research will focus on the topic of language teacher and learner identity. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.

K12-PD Webinar 17: Presentation Skills: Are we teaching them correctly?

Many English teachers employ an oral presentation component in their classrooms. This usually involves them teaching presentation skills to their students and often using them as a basis of assessment. However, in my research observations and personal experience, it seems that English

teachers (both native English speakers and local teachers) often adopt presentation models and styles that are inconsistent, outdated, or unsuited to the desired presentation format.

In this webinar, I will discuss and demonstrate a number of the features of teaching and/or performing oral presentations that are often overlooked or underappreciated, as well some that may no longer be as relevant as they once were.

The goal of this webinar is not only to provide teachers with clearer and more suitable parameters for teaching and evaluating English oral presentation skills but also to help Vietnamese teachers and academics who themselves present in English at conferences and seminars to appreciate and adopt some new presentation strategies. It is hoped that viewers will be actively involved in the discussions and that these might have an impact upon both their classrooms and their careers.
